Growing up among quirky artists on the Big Island of Hawaii, Vanessa Dominique Constanti decided
to rebel by studying law in preparation for a career as a lawyer. In order to ease her conscience, she fully intended
to specialize in child advocacy.
However, after earning a degree in Political Science at the University of Hawaii, Vanessa couldn’t
quite bring herself to applying to law school. She decided in stead to travel to the “mainland” with visions of a high-powered
corporate career.
Along with her sister, Stephanie, and her niece, Camille-Bijoux, Vanessa traveled to the
very un-tropical (but majestically green) Pacific Northwest and settled in the quaint city of Portland, Oregon.
After a few years of learning the importance of layered fleece and well-brewed hops, Vanessa eventually relinquished
her amusing illusion of corporate grandeur and fully embraced her aesthetic instinct.
Due to a bout of uncharacteristic shyness on Vanessa’s part (artists are so sensitive!),
it was Stephanie who took Vanessa’s hand-crafted jewelry to Portland’s “First Night” event. First Night, which takes
place on the first Thursday of every month, is when Portland’s Pearl District art galleries open for wine and schmoozing.
At the time, self-representing artists took the opportunity to solicit art connoisseurs by setting
up shop along the sidewalks facing the fashionable galleries. Covering a 1950’s card table with her mother’s vintage
French Toile, Stephanie displayed her sister’s jewelry on the corner of NW 13th St.. She sold out in a couple of hours.
The continuing sales of Vanessa’s jewelry affirmed her confidence in her product. After an inspirational
trip to France, the native country of her father, and Spain, the country that stole her heart, Vanessa returned to Portland
and rented a loft studio in a building that overlooked the corner of NW 13th St.
And thus, begins the story of Bijoux Luck. |
